The Ubiquiti Ultra is a managed switch designed for the UniFi system. It features 8 gigabit Ethernet ports (10/100/1000 Mb/s), with PoE+ (802.3af/at) output on 7 of them, and a PoE++ (802.3bt) input on the last port. The PoE++ input port is located at the back of the casing, next to the DC socket. The package does not include a power adapter, so you need to select one that suits your needs for the specific location. The PoE output power budget depends on the type of power supplied to the switch, with a minimum of 16 W when using PoE+ and a maximum of 202 W when using a 210 W AC/DC power adapter. The offered product supports Layer 2 management functions, including flow control, port isolation, and port mirroring. The switch has a desktop-type casing, and the package includes a mount for wall installation.
UniFi Network
The offered product operates under the UniFi software. UniFi enables centralized management of multiple devices from a single application. It is primarily designed for building hotspot networks composed of access points but also supports monitoring systems - the "Protect" series. With UniFi, you can build an extensive network and control it from one system. This allows for rapid configuration changes, hotspot settings adjustments, or firmware updates. The UniFi application is entirely free; you can download it for your computer or as a mobile app.
8 gigabit Ethernet ports
The switch is equipped with 8 gigabit Ethernet ports (10/100/1000 Mb/s) and has a switching capacity of 16 Gb/s. The device is designed for use in standard networks with a backbone based on 1 Gb/s connections.
PoE++ / DC input
The device can be powered in two ways: using PoE+ / PoE++ or the DC socket. The first method is useful if you are installing the USW-Ultra in a hard-to-reach location or if you want to extend the power supplied to IP cameras. If you intend to use the switch to power access points, you should use an external AC/DC power adapter with appropriate power. The input voltage range is 44 - 57 V DC.
The maximum power consumption of the switch itself is only 9 W when using the PoE input, or 8 W when using the DC socket.
7 PoE+ outputs
The switch features 7 ports with PoE+ output. It supports IEEE 802.3af/at protocols, with a maximum output power per port of 15.4 W for 802.3af or 30 W for 802.3at. The total power budget for the entire device depends on the power adapter you use. The full power range specifications can be found in the product documentation.
Usage
The Ubiquiti Ultra is well-suited for home networks and small offices. It offers PoE power and management while maintaining an attractive price point. If you have 2-3 access points and a few cameras at home or in the office, the USW-Ultra is an optimal solution.
On the other hand, the device is also suitable for larger networks as an access point powered by another switch. With a power budget of 42 W (when using PoE++ input), it's more than sufficient to power several access points or cameras.
